Devastating Blast Rocks Embakasi, Leaving Two Dead, 200 Injured

Nairobi, February 2, 2024 – A devastating explosion rocked the Mradi area in Embakasi near the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday night, leaving at least two people dead and more than 200 others injured. The incident, which occurred around 11 pm, sent shockwaves through the city, with the blast felt miles away.

According to Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, the explosion was triggered by a truck carrying gas cylinders, which erupted into a massive fireball. The intense flames quickly spread to nearby godowns and a residential area, causing extensive damage to vehicles and commercial properties.

The Nairobi West Hospital confirmed the unfortunate loss of two lives among those injured in the explosion. Mwaura expressed deep regret, stating, “Two fellow Kenyans have regrettably lost their lives while being attended to at the Nairobi West Hospital.” The injured victims were swiftly transported to various hospitals across the city for medical treatment.

Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments of the explosion, describing the chaos and panic that ensued. Vincent Onchoke, who narrowly escaped the blast, shared his experience, “I heard a loud explosion and suddenly a gas cylinder hit my door and ripped it open, and that is when we escaped.” Emily Mwangi, a nearby resident, echoed the sentiment, saying, “I have never heard such a loud explosion; it shook buildings.”

The impact of the explosion was felt more than 10 kilometers away, leaving residents in shock. Enock Korir, a Umoja estate resident, described the scene, stating, “I heard the explosion only to see huge flames and fireballs in Embakasi.”

Firefighters from the county government, as well as private companies, worked tirelessly throughout the night to contain the blaze. The inferno caused additional damage to several vehicles and businesses in the vicinity. The extent of the destruction has yet to be fully assessed as emergency response teams continue their efforts.

The government has initiated investigations into the incident to determine the cause of the explosion and assess potential lapses in safety protocols. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with ongoing rescue and recovery operations.

The tragic event has prompted discussions on safety measures regarding the transportation and storage of hazardous materials in urban areas. The local community is grappling with the aftermath, rallying together to support those affected by the explosion.

As Nairobi wakes up to the aftermath of this devastating incident, questions loom about the safety of industrial activities near densely populated areas. The city is left mourning the loss of lives and grappling with the task of rebuilding in the wake of this unforeseen tragedy.
