Tragedy at Homa Bay Hospital as TB Patient Dies by Suspected Suicide

HOMA BAY – Tragedy struck on Sunday at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital after a 38-year-old patient, identified as Mike Juma, was found dead in a suspected suicide incident.

Juma, who was receiving treatment for Tuberculosis (TB), reportedly hanged himself inside the male toilet of Ward 7, where he had been admitted to the isolation unit for specialized care. According to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vincent Oduor, the patient had entered the washroom to bathe but was later found unresponsive by a caretaker.

“It is a very unfortunate incident. He was in the isolation cube receiving TB treatment. A staff member found his body in the toilet and alerted the hospital management,” Dr. Oduor stated.

Homa Bay Sub-County Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat confirmed the incident and noted that preliminary investigations suggest the patient may have skipped his TB medication prior to the tragic event.

“Initial findings indicate he had not been consistent with his TB treatment,” said Commander Kiplagat, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.

The deceased’s body has since been transferred to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

The incident has sparked concern about the mental health of patients battling chronic illnesses, particularly those in isolation. Health officials are calling for increased psychological support for patients undergoing prolonged medical treatment to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Authorities have urged the public and caregivers to be vigilant and supportive of individuals facing serious health challenges, as mental distress can often go unnoticed until it’s too late.
