Terror Suspect Arrested with Explosive Materials in Nairobi CBD

A 22-year-old man suspected of plotting a terror attack in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) is in custody after being apprehended by police on Tuesday night. According to a report filed by officers from Kamukunji Police Station, the suspect was spotted at around 11:20 p.m. exhibiting suspicious and erratic behaviour, prompting officers to stop and question him.

Upon searching the suspect, officers discovered 21 detonators, 21 packets of a white substance believed to be ammonium nitrate, a five-metre-long electric cable, and other suspicious items. The man was immediately arrested and later handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further interrogation.

Police say the suspect could face charges under Kenya’s Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, which prescribes heavy penalties, including life imprisonment, for possession of explosive materials with the intent to commit acts of terror. He may also be charged under the Explosives Act for unlawful possession of dangerous substances without a license.

The arrest comes amid heightened tension in the capital, following violent protests over the police killing of blogger Albert Ojwang. Human rights groups have condemned the actions of an officer caught on camera shooting an unarmed hawker at close range during the demonstrations near Imenti House.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed the arrest of the officer involved, although his identity remains undisclosed.

The twin developments—Ojwang’s death and the arrest of the terror suspect—have sparked fresh concerns about safety and accountability within the city, even as authorities urge calm and continue investigations into both incidents.
