Shisha Crackdown: NACADA Apprehends Four Individuals in Operation

In a proactive move to address the concerning rise in shisha trade, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has made significant progress by apprehending four individuals. Acting on information received, NACADA’s Compliance and Enforcement officers carried out a targeted operation at the Oyster Bay Cafe Restaurant in Kilimani, Nairobi. The suspects, allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of shisha, were taken into custody.

The detained individuals, which include the manager, sellers, and a storekeeper associated with the establishment, were apprehended as part of NACADA’s ongoing efforts to crack down on businesses engaged in illegal shisha trade. Speaking on the operation, NACADA emphasized the importance of disrupting networks facilitating the sale and distribution of shisha, especially due to the significant health risks it poses, particularly to young people.

“These arrests mark a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to combat the scourge of shisha consumption,” stated NACADA officials. “We are committed to dismantling the networks facilitating the sale and distribution of shisha, which poses significant health risks to our citizens, particularly the youth.”

The operation yielded not only the apprehension of the individuals but also the confiscation of a substantial amount of shisha-related items. Among the items seized were 46 shisha bongs, assorted flavored tobacco, charcoal pipes, and a detailed stock-taking counterbook used for inventory management.

The detained individuals are currently held in custody while thorough investigations are conducted. Following this, they will face charges related to their involvement in the illegal shisha trade in court.

The crackdown on shisha comes amidst growing concerns over its widespread availability and consumption, particularly among young people. Shisha smoking, also known as hookah or waterpipe smoking, involves inhaling flavored tobacco through a water pipe, posing various health risks, including respiratory problems, heart disease, and addiction.

NACADA’s actions reflect the government’s commitment to protecting public health and safety by enforcing regulations against substances that pose harm to individuals and communities. The agency continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the sale and distribution of shisha products.
