President Ruto Nominates Meja as Chairperson of Public Service Commission

President William Ruto has nominated Mr. Francis Meja, the former head of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), to serve as the next Chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The nomination has been transmitted to the National Assembly, where it will undergo scrutiny and approval by Parliament before Mr. Meja can assume office.

The Public Service Commission plays a critical role in Kenya’s governance, as it is mandated to oversee the recruitment, management, and discipline of public service officers across various government departments. The PSC also ensures that public institutions operate in accordance with the principles of merit, transparency, and accountability, making the position of Chairperson highly influential in the civil service.

Mr. Meja, a seasoned public administrator, brings extensive experience in managing large government agencies. During his tenure at NTSA, he was widely recognized for implementing reforms aimed at improving road safety, digitizing service delivery, and enhancing organizational efficiency.

His nomination is seen by many as a step towards strengthening oversight in public service operations and promoting professionalism within government institutions. The nomination process requires the National Assembly to consider Mr. Meja’s qualifications, experience, and integrity.

Parliamentary committees are expected to review his past performance and may invite him to answer questions regarding his vision for the PSC and how he plans to address challenges in the public service. Upon approval by Parliament, Mr. Meja will officially take over the PSC Chairperson role, joining other commissioners in directing the affairs of the commission.

Public reaction to the nomination has been largely positive, with stakeholders in governance and civil service praising the move as timely and strategic.Observers note that strong leadership at the PSC is essential for promoting merit-based appointments, curbing inefficiencies, and ensuring that public officers serve the citizens effectively.

Mr. Meja’s appointment comes at a time when the government is emphasizing reforms and accountability in public institutions, signaling the administration’s commitment to efficient, transparent, and professional public service delivery. If confirmed, Mr. Meja will be expected to lead the commission in strengthening institutional capacity, improving service delivery, and fostering public trust in government operations, a mandate that will define his tenure as PSC Chairperson.
