President William Ruto has arrived in China for a five-day state visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations, promoting investment opportunities, and advancing key infrastructure projects between Kenya and China.
Ruto departed Nairobi on Monday night and is expected to headline the Kenya-China Business Forum, a major event bringing together over 100 companies from both countries. The forum seeks to open up new avenues for trade and investment, positioning Kenya as an attractive destination for Chinese enterprises.
During his visit, the President will hold high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and National People’s Congress Chairman Zhao Leji. These discussions will focus on mutual economic transformation, sustainable development, and strengthening global cooperation.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed emphasized that the visit builds upon the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2017, highlighting Kenya’s key role as China’s leading Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner in Africa. Major infrastructure projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway have already transformed Kenya’s economic landscape under this collaboration.
As part of Kenya’s export promotion agenda, President Ruto will also inaugurate the Kenya Tea Holding Centre in China’s Fujian Province. The facility is expected to boost the visibility of Kenyan tea in Asian markets, benefiting smallholder farmers and enhancing foreign exchange earnings.
Additionally, the visit is set to culminate in the signing of a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Kenya and China. This agreement will provide a structured framework for ongoing and future collaborations in sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, ICT, green energy, manufacturing, and agriculture—key pillars of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Projects on the agenda include the dualing of the Rironi-Malaba Highway, further development of the Standard Gauge Railway, and the Kenya Digital Infrastructure Project. The highway’s construction is scheduled to begin in June 2025 following Cabinet approval.
The President’s delegation includes senior government officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, demonstrating Kenya’s commitment to strengthening sectoral ties and attracting foreign investment.
President Ruto is also expected to champion reforms in the international financial system, advocate for inclusive global development, and promote regional peace and stability in discussions with Chinese leaders.
This visit marks a significant milestone in Kenya-China relations and reinforces Kenya’s leadership role in promoting South-South cooperation and shaping a sustainable global future.
