President Ruto Hands Over Keys to New Home Owners in Machakos

President William Ruto, on Friday afternoon, handed over keys to 176 new homeowners who have successfully bought the houses through the Boma Yangu platform, in the event that took place in Machakos following the completion of Machakos Boma Yangu Estate.

“As a model for social integration, the estate provides housing across all income categories. This ensures equitable access and encourages diverse, inclusive communities to flourish within the same development,” the President explained.

The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry for Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Alice Wahome, said the new estate enjoys convenient access to vital public institutions, including Machakos University, KMTC Machakos Campus, Machakos High School, Machakos Level 5 Hospital, and the county retail market — enhancing connectivity, accessibility, and service proximity.

“Over 450 jobs were created during construction, directly benefiting local youth, artisans, and suppliers. Notably, 39 artisans working on-site were formally assessed and certified under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, expanding their employability and future income opportunities,” she added.

The beneficiaries lauded the President for fulfilling his promise to provide decent housing with one Bernard Nzau a retired civil servant saying he never thought he would be a homeowner especially after retiring. He said the affordable housing project homeownership is a game changer and called on politicians to desist from politicizing the program.

26-year-old Faith Mueni Kioko a person living with disability, couldn’t hide her joy after receiving keys to her new studio apartment. Mueni said initially she had doubts that marginalised people would be considered in the allocation saying that she is now a homeowner is a God sent gift.

Acting CEO, Affordable Housing Board, Ms. Sheila Waweru, rallied Kenyans to register and start saving towards owning a home, through the Boma Yangu platform www.bomayangu.go.ke assuring every kenyan and equal opportunity to own a housing unit from the project.

“Phase I of the project hosts 220 housing units consisting of 60 Studio Apartments, 40 One-Bedroom Units, 60 Two-Bedroom Units and 60 Three-Bedroom Units, situated off Chumvi-Machakos-Kitui Road. We have many more projects across the country,” she explained.

The President also took the opportunity to break ground for Phase II of the project that will see 570 units constructed. The project will provide employment opportunities to over 500 workers on a daily basis.

Some of the amenities that this new project will have include a club house with a pool, ECD school, shopping mall among other infrastructure.
