President Ruto announces new Kenya Army, Navy commanders

President William Ruto has promoted Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him the Vice Chief of Defence forces.

Muriu replaces Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi whose term of service has come to an end after 42 years of service.

Additionally, the president has also promoted Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him Commander Kenya Army. Kimaiyo replaces Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru who has since retired after 39 years of service. Kimaiyo was the Deputy Army Commander until the time of his appointment.

Also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General is Commander Kenya Navy Major General Jimsom Longiro who will now be the Vice-chancellor of National Defense University. Until the time of his appointment, Longiro was serving as the commander of Kenya Navy.

Consequently, the president has promoted and appointed Brigadier Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a in the rank of Major General and appointed him the Commander Kenya Navy. Ng’ang’a was the base commander Kenya Navy base Manda until the time of his appointment.

Other changes announced include Maj Gen Juma Shee Mwinyikai who was promoted to the rank of Lt Gen and appointed commandant of National Defence College and Maj Gen Mohamed Nur Hassan who was appointed the Deputy Army Commander. 

Brig Luka Kipkemoi Kuto was promoted to Maj Gen and posted as the General Officer Eastern Command while Maj Gen Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu was posted to the military academy and named the commandant.

Maj Gen John Maison Nkoimo was posted to the border security command and appointed the General Officer Commanding.

Brig Peter Shikuku Chelimo was named the deputy commander of the Kenya Navy while Brig Yahya Abdi was named the senior directing staff Kenya Navy at the National Defence College.
