Police Abandon Njenga in Nairobi After Driving Around with him for Hours

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga released by police after extended aimless drive in Nairobi

On Thursday afternoon, the police confirmed that they had released Maina Njenga, former Laikipia governor aspirant, at the Nairobi Area Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) offices. Njenga had voluntarily presented himself at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road. Supporters of Njenga gathered at the location, chanting “Chairman,” eager to see their leader.

Following a court appearance, where he had obtained anticipatory bail on Tuesday to prevent his arrest or detention for alleged possession of two firearms and 90 rolls of cannabis, Njenga proceeded to the Nakuru County DCI offices to provide a statement. It was there that he was instructed to go to the DCI headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday.

Having heard reports that the police were searching for him, Njenga, accompanied by his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, presented himself at the Nakuru law courts on Wednesday. Outside the DCI headquarters in Nairobi, clashes between Njenga’s supporters and the police ensued, resulting in the deployment of tear gas.
