Opposition Leaders Camp at Karen Police Station as Tuju’s Arrest Sparks Outrage

Opposition leaders on Monday staged a dramatic standoff at Karen Police Station following the arrest of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, vowing not to leave until he received proper medical attention and due process.

Led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, the leaders accused authorities of acting with insensitivity and possible political motives, questioning the circumstances under which Tuju was detained shortly after resurfacing over alleged abduction claims. The opposition team expressed concern over Tuju’s health, insisting that his condition should take priority over any interrogation.

They maintained that keeping him in custody without immediate medical care raised serious human rights concerns.“We will not leave until he is treated and his rights are respected,” the leaders declared, as they maintained a firm presence outside the station.Their pressure appeared to yield results after doctors from Karen Hospital were granted access to attend to Tuju inside the police station.

Reports indicated that he was in pain, heightening fears among his allies about his well-being.Meanwhile, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, defended the arrest, describing the case as serious and stating that Tuju was required to record a detailed statement explaining his whereabouts.“A very serious offense.

Accordingly, Hon Raphael Tuju has been arrested and booked at Karen Police Station to record a comprehensive statement explaining his whereabouts.”However, opposition leaders dismissed the move as premature and potentially coercive, arguing that Tuju should first recover and be accorded legal protections before any formal questioning.

The standoff underscored rising political tensions, with opposition figures framing the incident as part of a broader pattern of intimidation, while calling for transparency in the handling of the alleged abduction case.
