Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his co-accused have agreed to forfeit assets worth Sh235 million to the State in a corruption case linked to the alleged misappropriation of Sh73.4 million. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that Obado and his associates surrendered eight parcels of land and two Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles as part of the settlement.
Among the high-value properties handed over, is a Loresho Ridge house valued at Sh40 million and the Sunrise Centre Commercial Block in Suna East, worth Sh88 million. The list also includes two five-storey residential blocks comprising 40 units in Suna East valued at Sh57.6 million, alongside two apartments in Greenspan, Nairobi worth Sh18 million and a maisonette house in Greenspan estimated at Sh14.5 million.
Other properties forfeited include a residential property in Kamagambo worth Sh10 million and two single-storey residential blocks with eight one-bedroom units in Suna East, valued at Sh7.7 million.
The recovery marks a significant step in the State’s ongoing fight against corruption, where high-ranking officials are compelled to return assets acquired through questionable means. For ordinary Kenyans, cases like this highlight the scale of public funds that could have been channeled to critical services such as healthcare, infrastructure and education, but instead were allegedly diverted for personal gain.
The DPP underscored that the move strengthens accountability in public office while sending a message that proceeds of corruption will not be retained by those implicated.
