Noordin Haji Approved as Director General of NIS

The National Assembly has given its approval for Noordin Haji to become the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS). The vote in favor of Haji’s nomination was almost unanimous, with only Budalang’i MP Raphael Wanjala dissenting. Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced the approval, stating that the House supports Haji’s appointment. President William Ruto had nominated Haji for the position on May 16, and now that he has been approved by the lawmakers, the President can officially appoint him as the country’s spy master.

Noordin Haji will be taking over from Major General (Rtd) Philip Wachira Kameru, who has served as the outgoing NIS Director General since September 2014, following his distinguished military career. Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah spoke in support of Haji’s approval, emphasizing his integrity and the sensitivity of the NIS boss position. Ichung’wah expressed confidence that Haji will uphold his oath of office and prevent the NIS from falling under State capture. National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi also backed Haji’s appointment and urged him to prioritize the security of the nation.

Mishi Mboko, the Likoni MP, described Haji as a capable leader, highlighting his experience in leading Kenya in security and intelligence matters. The MPs praised the outgoing Director General for fulfilling his constitutional mandate and keeping the country safe from terrorism. However, Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala expressed his discontent, suggesting that the Somali people had been marginalized in state appointments. Speaker Wetang’ula promptly ruled him out of order, emphasizing that the House recognizes its leaders based on their roles as MPs, not their ethnicity.
