Nelson Havi Announces Bid for Kenya’s Presidency in 2027

Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election. Speaking on Citizen TV on Monday, December 2, Havi stated that he was motivated to enter the race due to the lack of a serious challenger to President William Ruto. He emphasized that the decision was also influenced by Raila Odinga’s move to pursue the African Union Chairperson position instead of seeking the presidency.

“I will be running for President of the Republic of Kenya in 2027 because it is now quite evident that there ought to be an alternative to Dr. William Ruto,” Havi declared. He also referenced his “cousin Baba” (Raila Odinga), expressing that Odinga’s focus on continental matters had paved the way for others to step forward.

While Havi did not reveal which political party he would use for his presidential bid or if he would run as an independent, he made it clear that he believes the current field of candidates has failed to present a strong challenge to President Ruto. Havi’s entry into the race could add to what is expected to be a highly competitive election.

This will not be Havi’s first attempt at elective politics, as he previously contested the Westlands parliamentary seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket but lost to Tim Wanyonyi of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Currently, Havi serves as the chairperson of the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA), a position he was appointed to by President Ruto. In his remarks, Havi also urged Ruto to reconcile with the church, warning that picking a fight with religious institutions could be detrimental to his political future.

As the 2027 election approaches, other prominent figures, including Busia Senator Okiya Omtata and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, are also expected to challenge Ruto, setting the stage for a heated contest.
