The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has raised concerns over controversial statements made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at an event in Meru County. During the gathering, Gachagua warned President William Ruto against visiting Meru if Chief Justice Martha Koome were to be removed from office. His comments have sparked fears that such rhetoric could inflame ethnic tensions and undermine Kenya’s commitment to national unity.
NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia has formally addressed the issue by writing to Gachagua. In the letter, Dr. Kobia expressed disappointment over remarks that he described as potentially divisive, noting that such language threatens the harmonious coexistence of the nation’s diverse ethnic communities. “Your statement warning the president not to set foot in Meru County if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed is a direct violation of the president’s constitutional right as a symbol of national unity,” the letter stated.
Dr. Kobia also condemned Gachagua’s allegation that a scheme exists within the administration to remove Chief Justice Koome based solely on her ethnicity. According to NCIC officials, such claims are not only misleading but could also serve to promote negative stereotypes and animosity among communities. The commission stressed that political discourse must be handled with care, particularly when addressing sensitive issues that impact national cohesion.
The incident occurred at the AIPCA Antubetwe Church, where the former deputy president’s comments were delivered. In response, the NCIC has urged Gachagua to exercise greater restraint and choose his words more carefully to prevent further erosion of the unity and peace that Kenya strives to maintain. As the situation develops, political leaders are reminded to prioritize respectful dialogue and responsible communication to foster a stable, inclusive society.
The NCIC continues to monitor the situation closely, urging all public figures to contribute positively to Kenya’s unity and democratic integrity.
