Ledama Sunkuli Takes Over as Acting IEBC CEO and Commission Secretary

Nairobi, Kenya Moses Ledama Sunkuli has been named the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Commission Secretary of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the departure of Marjan Hussein Marjan. The commission announced the leadership change after Marjan’s exit earlier this week.

Sunkuli, previously the director in charge of electoral operations at IEBC, will step into the dual role while the organisation begins a recruitment process to find a permanent replacement. In his new position, Sunkuli inherits the responsibility of steering IEBC’s administrative and strategic functions during a crucial period of preparation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon said the choice reflects confidence in Sunkuli’s experience and deep understanding of the commission’s work.“Sunkuli’s background in managing electoral operations gives him the institutional insight needed to ensure stability within the commission as we move forward,” Ethekon said. The acting appointment is expected to last for up to six months or until a substantive CEO and Commission Secretary is appointed.

During this transition, IEBC has signalled its commitment to maintaining operational continuity and boosting public confidence in Kenya’s electoral process.Sunkuli’s elevation marks a significant moment in IEBC’s leadership reshuffle, with many observers watching how the commission positions itself in the run-up to the next national polls.
