KUTRRH Successfully Performs First Kidney Transplants in Kenya

Kenya has officially launched kidney transplant services at the Kenya University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), marking a major advancement in the country’s healthcare system. The facility successfully conducted its first two kidney transplant surgeries on May 7 and 8, 2025.

Both transplant recipients and their donors are reported to be in stable condition and recovering well. This achievement positions KUTRRH as an emerging centre for specialized renal care in the country.

Speaking during the official launch on Friday, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, hailed the milestone as a major stride toward strengthening local specialized healthcare services.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to expanding specialized healthcare services locally, and reducing dependence on overseas treatment,” said Dr. Oluga.

The launch follows a three-year initiative to establish the transplant centre, which included staff training at Apollo Hospital in India, acquisition of specialized equipment, and building key partnerships. The surgeries were carried out in collaboration with kidney specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who will continue mentoring the KUTRRH team as they build internal capacity.

One donor-recipient pair is already scheduled for the next transplant, and eight more pairs are currently undergoing evaluation at the hospital’s transplant clinic.

The kidney transplant program is supported by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which has eased the financial burden on patients, aligning with the country’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

Dr. Oluga emphasized that the initiative not only improves access to life-saving procedures but also showcases Kenya’s growing capacity to offer advanced medical services locally.
