Kiptum’s Burial Moved to Align with President Ruto’s Calendar

The funeral arrangements for Kelvin Kiptum, the esteemed marathon record holder whose life was tragically cut short in a road accident on February 12, have been adjusted to accommodate the schedule of President William Ruto. Originally set for Saturday, February 24, the burial will now take place a day earlier on Friday, February 23.

A spokesperson for the Kiptum family disclosed that the alteration was made to synchronize with President Ruto’s commitments. According to the spokesperson, there were indications that President Ruto would be departing for Namibia on Saturday, prompting the decision to reschedule the burial. While the information regarding the President’s itinerary was not officially confirmed by State House, the family spokesperson emphasized that the burial was expected to be a State function with President Ruto in attendance.

The adjustment in the funeral date is linked to the funeral arrangements of Namibia’s late President Hage Geingob, who passed away on February 4. Namibia’s current President, Nangolo Mbumba, had announced that Geingob’s interment would take place on February 24. President Ruto had expressed his condolences for the late Namibian leader, highlighting Geingob’s commitment to African unity and global prominence.

President Ruto’s involvement in Kiptum’s funeral preparations has been notable from the outset. Describing Kiptum as an exceptional athlete who had made significant contributions to the world of sports, President Ruto affirmed his dedication to ensuring a fitting farewell for the young marathoner. Kiptum, at the tender age of 24, had achieved remarkable success in marathons held in Valencia, Chicago, London, and other prestigious competitions, earning him recognition as a beacon of Kenya’s athletic prowess.

In addition to his heartfelt condolences, President Ruto also honored Kiptum’s last wish by overseeing the construction of a house for the bereaved family, underscoring his commitment to supporting the loved ones left behind by the talented athlete.

As preparations for Kiptum’s burial continue, the adjustment in the funeral date underscores the significance of his contributions to the sporting world and the esteem in which he was held by both his family and the nation as a whole. The rescheduled date not only reflects logistical considerations but also serves as a testament to the impact of Kiptum’s legacy, which has resonated deeply with Kenyans and sports enthusiasts worldwide.
