The Judiciary of Kenya is in mourning following the sudden death of Dr. Wilfred Mutubwa, Vice Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), who passed away on Tuesday evening after collapsing during a virtual court session in Nairobi.
Dr. Mutubwa’s untimely death has left his family, colleagues, and the legal fraternity in shock, as the cause remains unknown. Authorities have transferred his body to the mortuary, with investigations and an autopsy underway.
At the time of his passing, Dr. Mutubwa was also the Dean of the School of Law at Mount Kenya University (MKU). A distinguished academic and practitioner, he was highly regarded for his advocacy for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, including arbitration and mediation, as integral to Kenya’s justice system.
Chief Justice Martha Koome led tributes, describing Dr. Mutubwa as a trailblazer in the legal field. “On behalf of the Judiciary family and myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Mutubwa was instrumental in championing arbitration and mediation as critical tools in delivering justice,” Koome stated.
Dr. Mutubwa also held prominent roles, including Chairman Emeritus of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – Kenya Branch and membership in the Judiciary’s Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce. He was recognized globally, serving as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo eulogized him as a decorated legal scholar and dedicated mentor. “His outstanding contributions to ADR and his transformative leadership at MKU’s School of Law leave an enduring legacy in Kenya’s legal profession,” Odhiambo said.
Dr. Mutubwa was actively engaged in an ongoing dispute resolution involving a Nairobi hospital, underscoring his commitment to fostering amicable solutions in legal conflicts.
His death marks a significant loss for Kenya’s legal and academic communities, with many hailing his efforts in enhancing justice delivery and mentoring future legal professionals.
