JKIA Temporarily Closed as Mourners Flood Airport to Receive Raila Odinga’s Remains

Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were brought to a temporary halt on Thursday, 16th October 2025, following heightened security concerns. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced that the closure was a precautionary measure after large crowds gathered at the airport to receive the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya.

The unexpected influx of mourners overwhelmed airport security, forcing authorities to act swiftly to maintain safety and order. According to KCAA Director General Emile N. Arao, the situation became critical when mourners gained access to restricted zones, raising safety concerns for both travelers and airport staff.

In the official statement, he said, “A large number of mourners gained access to restricted areas, prompting a precautionary closure to allow security teams to restore order and ensure safety.” Security personnel were immediately deployed to manage the situation and ensure that all operations could safely resume once the airport was fully secured.

Travelers and members of the public were urged to remain calm and avoid the airport until further notice. The KCAA statement advised, “Members of the public and travelers are advised to remain calm and avoid the airport area until further notice. Normal operations will resume once the airport is declared secure in the next two hours.” A Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) was also issued to alert airlines and international partners about the temporary suspension of operations.

In its closing remarks, the authority expressed appreciation for public understanding and cooperation. “KCAA regrets any inconvenience and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation,” the statement read. The closure marked an emotional day for the nation as Kenyans united to mourn and honor Raila Odinga, a towering political figure whose leadership and legacy continue to shape Kenya’s democratic journey.
