Noordin Haji, the director of public prosecutions, has ordered Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to begin an investigation into the crimes committed on March 20 and March 27 during Azimio demonstrations.
In a letter dated March 27 and sent to Koome, Haji instructed him to look into the instigation, planning, and organization of all recorded offenses associated with the demos. Within 14 days, he must produce an investigation file.
Accordingly, you are hereby instructed to conduct thorough investigations into the aforementioned offenses and all individuals responsible for planning, inciting, instigating, and/or financing the commission of any offense and submit the investigation file within fourteen (14) days of the date of this letter, according to Article 157(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, according to the letter.
Haji made reference to the alleged deaths, violence, and destruction of property during the protests, including arson, stealing, and other crimes.
Also, he ordered that any instances of provocation and racial disparagement on social media platforms be looked into. The DPP acknowledged that several suspects have subsequently been detained by the police, but he pointed out that no inquiries have been made into who was behind the planning, inciting, and funding of the aforementioned offenses.
In carrying out its duties, Haji reaffirmed the Office’s dedication to upholding the law and respecting human rights. He promised that anyone found guilty of committing any crime would face the full force of the law in their prosecution.
