A somber mood has gripped Gakoigo village in Murang’a County after four children tragically lost their lives in a house fire on Thursday night.
The fire, which broke out while the children were asleep, completely razed the house before neighbors could intervene. Witnesses reported noticing thick smoke billowing from the house, prompting them to rush to the scene. Despite their efforts, the fire spread rapidly, preventing any rescue attempts.
After battling the flames for hours, locals managed to extinguish the fire, only to find the children had been burned beyond recognition. Among the victims were three siblings, comprising two boys and two girls.
Area police officers later arrived, retrieving the charred bodies and transporting them to the mortuary. Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
This tragedy echoes a similar incident two weeks ago in Moburo, Kericho County, where three children perished in a fire that engulfed their home on December 7. In that case, witnesses said the children had been locked in the house by a sibling who had gone out to play. Villagers believe the fire may have started from a charging phone that exploded, igniting the timber house.
Residents managed to extinguish the fire before officers from Cheborgei Police Station arrived to collect the bodies, which were later taken to Kapkatet Hospital Mortuary.
Both incidents have left communities reeling, calling for heightened safety measures to prevent further tragedies. Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, especially during the festive season, to ensure children’s safety.
