Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has urged President William Ruto to appoint an independent body ahead of the 2027 polls.
Gachagua joined many Kenyans who voiced their concerns with the non-existent IEBC with just two years remaining. As part of the #appointiebcnow trend, hundreds of Kenyans expressed their disapproval of what they saw as the Kenya Kwanza Government’s wilful attempt to create an operational IEBC.
While speaking during a Sunday service, Gachagua reminded Ruto that IEBC needs to be in office for more than 3 years before elections. “And on matters of IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission), an election is as credible as the process. The electoral commission must be in place three years before the election; now we have two and a half years remaining, and there is no IEBC, and people can read mischief,” he said.
Some insist that the delay to appoint a new IEBC body has been blocked due to pending court cases that have remained unresolved for the longest time.
