Five Dead as Lorry Hits Pedestrians in Kuria Accident

Migori, Kenya – Five pedestrians, including two teachers, died on Sunday night after they were hit by a lorry transporting maize at Mabera along the Migori-Isebania highway.

According to witnesses, the driver lost control of the vehicle while crossing Ragana Bridge, a known accident blackspot. Kuria West Sub-County Police Commander, Reuben Bett, confirmed the incident, stating that the pedestrians were on foot due to the absence of a proper footbridge. “There is an incomplete footbridge, but many people opt to use the road,” said Bett.

The lorry, which was heading to Migori from Isebania, overturned on the bridge after hitting the pedestrians. The driver and the conductor sustained critical injuries and were rushed to different hospitals for treatment.

Emergency responders moved the bodies of the deceased to St Akidiva Mirindi Hospital’s morgue for post-mortem examinations. Residents expressed concerns over the safety of the road, urging authorities to take immediate action.

Local resident Richard Chacha called on the Ministry of Transport to inspect the road and complete the unfinished footbridge to prevent further accidents. “This bridge is narrow and lacks pedestrian provisions, making it dangerous for road users,” he said.

Police have advised drivers to exercise caution when approaching the area, highlighting that the accident spot has a history of similar incidents.

Authorities are continuing their investigations into the cause of the accident while families of the deceased mourn their loss.
