CS Ogamba Wants All Education Funds from NG-CDF Redirected to Ministry

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has proposed that all funds supporting education under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) be redirected to his ministry should the fund be scrapped.

Appearing before the Senate, Ogamba argued that more than 75 percent of NG-CDF allocations already go into education, mainly through bursaries and school projects. He said channeling the funds through the ministry would allow for more coordinated planning and ensure resources are used effectively.

According to Ogamba, the funds could be used to expand school infrastructure, support needy learners, and advance efforts towards free education. He noted that duplication of roles between the ministry and NG-CDF had slowed progress in some areas, while some schools continued to operate with strained facilities.

The CS also revealed that the government is preparing a comprehensive audit to track all spending in the education sector. He said Kenya still lacks a clear and consolidated picture of the total education budget, with money coming from different sources but not fully accounted for.

Ogamba insisted that a transparent and unified system would not only enhance accountability but also make it easier for policymakers to prioritize investments. The Senate is now expected to deliberate on his proposal as part of the ongoing debate about the future of NG-CDF.
