Chief Justice Koome Leads Tributes for Trailblazing Ex-MP Catherine Nyamato

Nairobi – Chief Justice Martha Koome has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Catherine Nyamato, Kenya’s first female Member of Parliament from the Gusii region, who passed away on July 16.

In a statement released today, CJ Koome described Nyamato as a “trailblazer and steadfast champion of women’s rights,” honouring her tireless efforts in public service, civil society, and women’s empowerment. “On behalf of the Judiciary and on my own behalf, I join the nation in mourning the loss of Hon. Catherine Nyamato. Her leadership, service, and kindness will forever be remembered,” Koome stated.

Nyamato served as a nominated MP between 1997 and 2002 under the KANU regime of President Daniel Arap Moi. She also held key leadership roles as National Women Leader for Narc-Kenya and Secretary General of the League of Kenyan Women Voters.

Koome recalled working alongside Nyamato in civil society spaces, where their professional collaboration grew into a close friendship. She praised Nyamato for her vocal opposition to Female Genital Mutilation and her commitment to uplifting women and girls, particularly through financial support and advocacy.

“She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations,” Koome added.

Nyamato collapsed near her farm in Kijauri, Nyamira County, while speaking with youth on a local project. She was rushed to Summit Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her passing has sparked a wave of tributes from across the political and civil rights spectrum, with many celebrating her enduring impact on gender equality and community empowerment.

Parliament observed a moment of silence in her honour earlier this week during a session discussing constitutional amendments to entrench key funds such as NG-CDF and NGAAF.
