The legal fraternity is in mourning following the death of respected Senior Counsel Judy Thongori. The celebrated family law expert reportedly succumbed to a short illness, leaving an indelible mark on Kenya’s legal landscape.
Thongori, who practised law for over three decades, was a trailblazer in family law. In 2003, she founded Judy Thongori & Co. Advocates, where she served as a litigator, advisor, and mediator. Throughout her career, she championed family law reforms and created public awareness through various media platforms.
Her death has elicited tributes from prominent figures in the legal profession. Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo described her as a “beacon of excellence” and a “North Star” for aspiring and practicing lawyers. “Judy Thongori SC exemplified legal prowess and significantly contributed to family law and human rights. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Odhiambo remarked.
Thongori was instrumental in shaping Kenya’s legal framework on family law. She played a pivotal role in the development of the Matrimonial Property Act (2013) and the Marriage Act (2014). Her activism extended to training lawmakers, judicial officers, and police on gender and human rights issues.
Recognized for her distinguished service, Thongori became the first woman inducted into the LSK’s “Roll of Honour” in 2013 and was awarded for her pro bono legal work in 2015. In 2020, she earned the rank of Senior Counsel for her exemplary contributions to the profession.
Thongori earned her LLB from the University of Nairobi and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law. Her passing is a profound loss to the legal community and the nation.
