Calvin Okoth (Gaucho) Hospitalized After Alleged Armed Attack

Calvin Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, the President of Bunge la Wananchi, was reportedly admitted to the hospital following an alleged attack on Tuesday. The incident occurred just before the Azimio la Umoja rally at Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi. Gaucho, in a statement on his Facebook page, revealed that he was assaulted by a group of unidentified armed men.

In his message, posted on Wednesday, June 28, Gaucho expressed his gratitude to God for his escape but mentioned that he had sustained serious injuries. He confirmed that he is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.

This attack comes in the wake of recent denials by Gaucho regarding his affiliation with the Azimio la Umoja coalition. During an interview with a local media station on June 7, Gaucho clarified that he only collaborated with Azimio leaders due to their shared vision on addressing issues affecting Kenyans. He emphasized that his involvement stemmed from his role as the Bunge President and his participation in anti-government protests, which he initiated alongside members of Bunge la Wananchi, with Azimio subsequently joining the cause.

Furthermore, Gaucho expressed his willingness to meet with President William Ruto to discuss matters pertaining to youth welfare. He explained that if President Ruto were to extend an invitation, he would accept it, as the leader of Azimio is Raila Odinga. Gaucho emphasized that he solely represents the residents of the slums and does not align himself with either Kenya Kwanza or Azimio.

The motive behind the attack on Gaucho remains unclear, and further investigations are likely underway. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of political figures and the escalating tensions surrounding political affiliations in Kenya.
