Bungoma County Initiates Construction of Modern Market

The Bungoma County government has initiated the construction of an advanced market worth Sh272 million in Kamukuywa, Kimilili sub-county. This state-of-the-art market is designed to accommodate up to 4,000 traders and will offer a range of amenities including stalls, a banking hall, offices, sanitation facilities, open-air retail space, paved driveways, and a baby care room. The market aims to provide a much-needed upgrade for traders who currently operate in unsanitary and dusty conditions along the busy Kitale-Webuye highway. With the inclusion of a perimeter wall and floodlights, the safety of traders and their merchandise will be ensured.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Kenneth Lusaka expressed that this project aligns with his administration’s objective of developing the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector. He emphasized that the market will significantly enhance the business environment in Kamukuywa, which is situated along the Webuye-Kitale highway. Governor Lusaka further highlighted that the project will act as a crucial catalyst for economic development, revenue generation, increased investments, and improved livelihoods. The governor reiterated his commitment to fulfill the promise of upgrading open-air markets throughout the county, promoting trading activities, and creating a conducive environment for traders to prosper.

Various dignitaries attended the ceremony, including Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, County Executive Committee members, chief officers, several MCAs, and local leaders. The commissioning of this ultra-modern market marks a significant step toward boosting economic growth and supporting the thriving business community in Bungoma County.
