Bodyguards Quickly Secure Kalonzo, Maraga Vehicles

Former Chief Justice David Maraga was whisked away by his security aides after anti-riot police lobbed teargas to disperse leaders and protesters marching in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The IncidentThe confrontation erupted on Thursday, June 25, 2026, during a procession heading toward the Parliament buildings. Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa were marching alongside activist Hussein Khalid and the families of victims who died during the June 2024 anti-government demonstrations.

The Dispersal: As the group marched through the streets carrying flowers to layout a commemorative wreath near Parliament, police issued dispersal orders and fired rounds of teargas into the crowd.The Evacuation: Amidst the sudden chaos and thick smoke, bodyguards and security aides swiftly intercepted and secured David Maraga and other prominent leaders, moving them safely to their vehicles.

Barricades: Despite the heavy security presence, several opposition figures like Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua managed to lay their symbolic wreaths directly onto the barbed wire barricades erected around the Parliament perimeter.Current Situation in Nairobi CBDHeightened Security: A massive deployment of General Service Unit (GSU) officers and regular police units have sealed off entry points into key areas, specifically targeting roads leading to State House and Parliament.

Ongoing Protests: Small groups of young demonstrators continue to gather within the CBD to mark the anniversary of the 2024 youth-led movement, demanding justice and accountability.Traffic Disruption: Major highways and transport routes connecting to the city center remain heavily affected or temporarily blocked by police checkpoints.
