In a fiery editorial, the Standard Media Group has raised critical questions about ODM leader Raila Odinga’s current political stance, accusing him of betraying the principles he once championed.
The publication scrutinized Odinga’s alignment with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)-led government, calling out inconsistencies in his actions and statements following the 2022 elections. Once a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, Odinga now finds himself navigating the complexities of a broad-based government arrangement.
The editorial noted that Odinga, who was once synonymous with opposition politics, now enjoys privileges associated with executive power, including motorcades, red-carpet receptions, and access to high-level government retreats.
The piece highlighted Odinga’s participation in defending government projects, including controversial ventures such as the failed Adani deal, while questioning his silence on critical issues like corruption, disobedience of court orders, misuse of public funds, and alleged human rights violations by state security forces.
The editorial also pointed out what it described as a glaring omission in Odinga’s discourse, the constitutional provision for forming a transitional government under Section 146 in cases of state failure. It further questioned why this option had been ignored and asked whether ODM believed that the government was only legitimate if they were in power.
Adding to the controversy, the editorial accused Odinga of nepotism and cronyism, citing the appointment of his close allies and family members to top government positions. The publication argued that such actions have alienated the younger generation, who now view these developments as a betrayal of the values Odinga once embodied, such as equality, justice, and accountability.
The editorial concluded with a bold ultimatum, urging Odinga to either distance himself from the current administration or champion transparency and legal accountability. It argued that Kenya needed to confront its failures and have honest discussions about its leadership and governance. According to the publication, if Odinga does not take decisive action, he risks tarnishing his legacy and being remembered as a defender of the very systems he once opposed.
The piece has reignited national conversations about leadership ethics, political allegiance, and the role of opposition in Kenya’s democracy. As Raila Odinga faces mounting criticism, his next moves will be critical in shaping how he is perceived by a public increasingly frustrated by political inconsistencies and a lack of genuine reform.
