Kenya mourns the death of renowned Member of Parliament (MP) for Emurua Dikirr, Johana Ngeno, who died after a helicopter crashed on Saturday evening in Nandi County.
The Airbus H125 helicopter, operated by Corporate Helicopters, went down at about 4:45 p.m. in Chepkiep Village in Mosop Sub-County. The incident is reportedly tied poor weather conditions currently affecting various parts of the country.
Ngeno, who was 53 years old and serving his third term as MP, was identified at the scene through documents recovered from the wreckage.
Before the crash, the legislator had been attending events in Trans Nzoia and the Mara River areas. He had earlier shared photos of himself aboard the aircraft, indicating he was traveling between engagements.
Following news of his death, various political leaders across the country have expressed shock and sorrow. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua mourned him as a loyal friend and ally, while also calling for a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority is expected to begin investigations to establish the cause of the accident, even as the country mourns the loss of the three-term lawmaker.
