Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has raised alarm over the rising levels of drug and alcohol abuse among the youth, particularly in the Mount Kenya region.
The legislator described the situation as more than just a health or social issue, asserting that it is being used as a tool for political manipulation. Kaluma expressed concerns about the devastating impact of substance abuse, stating that many young people in the region have become idle, addicted, and disillusioned.
According to Kaluma, this state of vulnerability has left the youth susceptible to exploitation by political actors seeking to advance their interests. He noted that the crisis has stripped many young people of hope and a sense of purpose, making them easy targets for manipulation.
The MP emphasized that this trend poses a significant threat to the future of the youth and the nation as a whole. He called for urgent interventions to address the substance abuse crisis and its socio-political implications.
Kaluma’s remarks highlight the growing need for collaborative efforts to rehabilitate the affected youth, empower them with opportunities, and protect them from exploitative forces in society
