Tensions are rising within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino questions the integrity of the party’s planned National Delegates Conference (NDC), warning that flaws in the process could trigger a parallel forum.
Babu says his concerns stem from what he describes as attempts by some senior party officials to influence the outcome of the forthcoming party elections by controlling the delegates’ list. He argues that such actions undermine internal democracy and disadvantage younger leaders seeking a chance to rise within the party.
According to the legislator, there are alleged plans to transport delegates from regions perceived to be loyal to certain party leaders, including parts of the Rift Valley and the northeastern region, in a move he says could skew voting at the conference. He maintains that the NDC should reflect genuine grassroots representation rather than regional or factional interests.
Babu has vowed to closely examine the delegates’ register, insisting that only legitimately elected delegates should be allowed to participate in the conference. He says safeguarding the credibility of the list is critical to ensuring free and fair internal elections within ODM.
The MP has further warned that if his efforts to push for transparency fail, he would mobilise an alternative NDC, which he claims would adhere to proper democratic standards and allow party members to make independent leadership choices.
His remarks highlight growing debates within ODM over generational transition, internal accountability and the future direction of the party, as preparations for key leadership contests gather pace.
