Babu Owino Speaks On Not Supporting Rigathi Gachagua Impeachment

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has revealed he did not understand why Gachagua was impeached.

Rigathi Gachagua was impeached last year after a motion was brought by Mwengi Mutuse. He was then removed from office after the majority of the legislators voted in favour of the motion. Gachagua was accused of various things like corruption, abuse of office, and disrespect to the president. Most of the MPs from the Kenya Kwanza and ODM parties voted in favour of the motion. This was largely due to Raila Odinga deciding to work with President William Ruto shortly after the Gen Z demonstrations back in July 2024.

Babu Owino has now revealed the reasons why he did not vote in favour of the motion: “About Rigathi, I did not vote to impeach him. I was told to vote, but when I heard him speak, I washed my hands like Pilate in Jesus’ crucifixion. From the way he spoke, genuinely speaking, I did not see his problem anywhere. I am a very just leader; if someone has made a mistake, I say that he has made a mistake… He was being accused of tribalism. Tell me who is not tribal among those leaders. They are all tribal. Is that a mistake? If yes, then all of them were supposed to go in the two houses,” Babu said.
