To preserve unearthed dead from Shakahola shallow graves, the International Committee of the Red Cross Nairobi Regional Delegation (ICRC) has given a refrigerator.
Kenya Red Cross claimed in a Twitter post that the county morgue was overflowing with bodies.
According to Kenya Red Cross, “the large number of bodies from the Shakahola incident continues to overload facilities in Kilifi county.”
“A refrigerated container has just arrived to support the county with assistance from our partners ICRC Nairobi and will be used as a makeshift morgue for the bodies recovered from the site.”
More victims are reportedly still believed to be buried in shallow graves inside the Shakahola Forest, bringing the death toll in Shakahola to around 90 as of Tuesday night. In preparation for the Shakahola response, the Kenya Red Cross announced on Tuesday that it has set up tracking and counseling stations at the Malindi subcounty hospital.
At least 213 individuals had been reported missing, and 112 of them were minors under the age of 18, who were thought to be adherents of notorious Malindi preacher Paul Mackenzie. Hundreds of Mackenzie’s supporters had relocated to the enormous woodland to reportedly encounter Jesus Christ while fasting to death.
