Nairobi county Governor Johnson Sakaja has today on 12th February, 2023, disclosed plans to open the first public Intense Care Unit(ICU) in the county.
Through his social media, the first term Governor said the plan will be due soon, not giving a definite time frame. He added that the ICUs will be installed in all the level 5 hospitals in Nairobi county.
“We’ve put together Nairobi County’s first ICU facility. To be opened soon. Can you believe the county has never had a public ICU,” said Sakaja.
Level 5 hospitals are the county referral hospitals run by Chief Executive Officers who are medics by profession and have over 100 beds capacity for their in-patient. Services include In-patient and out-patient care, imaging, health promotion, rehabilitation and funeral home services.
ICU services are quite few in Kenya and that has always been a trouble to those in need, not to add the fact that ICU service cost is high, going up to KSH. 3500 a day.
