Thousands of supporters gathered at the iconic Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East on Sunday [as the Linda Mwananchi movement held its inaugural Nairobi political rally], marking a major show of strength for opposition figures consolidating support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The high-stakes mobilisation began with a Sunday morning worship service at All Saints Cathedral before turning into a massive motorcade procession through major commercial hubs. Led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Vihiga Senator Godffrey Osotsi, the convoy navigated past Marikiti, Gikomba, and Burma markets along Jogoo Road. Thousands of supporters joined the procession, causing traffic delays but remaining orderly throughout the tour.
“Program ya Sunday ni fupi sana… kwanza maombi ndio Mungu aongezee mahasidi confusion… alafu tuingie kiwanja pale Jacaranda,” [Sifuna had stated in a social media broadcast]rallying his supporters to attend the event.
The rally took place amid heightened security measures following stern warnings from Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud, who had prohibited large political gatherings inside the Central Business District to prevent disruption to commercial activities. Heavy police presence was stationed at key intersections across the city. However, unlike previous opposition gatherings marked by violent clashes, the Sunday event concluded without teargas emissions or confrontations between police and attendees.
Addressing the crowd at Jacaranda Grounds, Sifuna commended law enforcement officers for providing security and lauded supporters for thwarting alleged attempts by rogue groups to disrupt the gathering.
“I want to thank the police service in Nairobi because today they have provided us with security since we left the church until our arrival here,” [Sifuna told the gathering]. “I also want to thank our youth who dealt with the goons who wanted to come and disrupt our meeting.”
Political observers noted that the peaceful execution of the Nairobi rally provides the Linda Mwananchi brigade with momentum as opposition figures seek to build broad regional coalitions. Organizers confirmed that additional regional tours will follow as the movement expands its nationwide reach.
