The Communications Authority of Kenya has opened applications for its Emerging Technologies Regulatory Sandbox. The initiative gives innovators a controlled environment to test new digital solutions before they enter the market.

The Authority is inviting eligible innovators, entrepreneurs, technology companies and researchers to apply for admission into the sandbox for the 2026/2027 financial year. The programme is designed to encourage innovation while ensuring consumer protection and supporting the growth of Kenya’s information and communications technology sector.

According to the regulator, the sandbox enables innovators to test digital communication products, services and business models that may fall outside existing regulatory frameworks. It also promotes collaboration between innovators and the Authority across sectors including telecommunications, cybersecurity, broadcasting, multimedia, e-commerce, postal and courier services.

Applications are being accepted from projects focusing on areas such as next-generation networks (5G and 6G), the Internet of Things (IoT), machine-to-machine communications, over-the-top (OTT) services, digital broadcasting, cybersecurity solutions, spectrum management technologies, artificial intelligence and ICT accessibility tools for underserved communities.

The Communications Authority said the initiative aims to foster innovation, promote market growth and strengthen consumer protection while helping developers navigate regulatory requirements for emerging technologies.
