Embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has received a temporary reprieve after the party’s disciplinary committee extended the deadline for him to submit his response before appearing before the disciplinary panel.
In a fresh update issued Friday, ODM Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen confirmed that the committee had allowed Sifuna more time to file his written defence, with new timelines expected to be communicated in due course.The decision comes amid an escalating internal standoff within the party that has placed the Nairobi Senator at the centre of a major leadership dispute.
Earlier this month, ODM formally initiated disciplinary proceedings against Sifuna, accusing him of gross misconduct and actions allegedly contrary to party resolutions.
Sifuna had initially been directed to respond to a show-cause letter within four days and to appear before the disciplinary panel on Friday, April 10. The letter, signed by party chairperson Gladys Wanga, cited several accusations, including publicly contradicting the party’s official position, missing crucial party meetings, and allegedly participating in parallel political activities not sanctioned by the party leadership.
The latest extension is expected to temporarily ease pressure on the ODM Secretary General as the party navigates one of its most sensitive internal disputes in recent months. Political observers view the move as an indication that the party may be seeking to allow room for consultations, legal review, and possible reconciliation before the disciplinary hearing proceeds.The matter has already spilled into the legal arena after Sifuna moved to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal seeking to halt attempts to remove him from office and suspend the disciplinary proceedings.
