Safaricom PLC has committed KSh20 million to support the 2026 Lewa Safari Marathon, which will take place on June 27 at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The marathon, viewed do vital by the organisers, continue to serve as a key fundraising event for wildlife conservation and community development.
Since it began in 2000, the event has raised about KSh1.3 billion. The funds have supported wildlife protection and community programmes such as healthcare, education, and small business support in rural areas. This year’s marathon is expected to raise more than KSh15 million, with hundreds of participants from different countries set to take part. Over the years, the event has attracted more than 25,000 runners from over 40 countries.
The funds raised have supported conservation efforts for species such as Grevy’s zebras, rhinos, mountain bongos, and Hawksbill turtles. It has also helped provide over 40,000 clinic visits and supported many school programmes.
Organisers say the marathon is no longer just a sporting event, but a long-term funding platform for conservation and local livelihoods. Support from companies like Safaricom and Huawei has helped grow the event and increase its impact.
Safaricom says its support reflects its role in promoting conservation through technology and connectivity. Additionally, the marathon helps protect important wildlife habitats while also supporting local communities.
The event continues to link global participation with real impact on the ground, making it one of Kenya’s key conservation fundraising initiatives.
