Kiambu County Government, under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, has been recognized as the best-performing county in the implementation of the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Program (NAVCDP) for the 2025–2026 financial year.
The recognition positions Kiambu as a benchmark for devolved agricultural development and highlights the county’s sustained investment in farmer-centered, innovation-driven interventions.At the core of Kiambu’s success is its deliberate prioritization of small-scale farmers, who constitute the majority of the county’s agricultural producers.
The county has established a robust support framework that integrates Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOS), cooperatives, farmer grants, small-scale farmer groups, and Common Interest Groups (CIGs).
This ecosystem has enhanced farmers’ access to affordable credit, collective marketing platforms, and capacity-building opportunities, enabling them to scale production and stabilize household incomes.In line with the national agenda on youth empowerment and digital transformation, Kiambu County has also embraced a progressive model that recruits young, digitally skilled agripreneurs.
These agripreneurs serve at the grassroots level, bridging the gap between modern agricultural science and traditional farming practices.
They provide essential services such as soil testing, crop and livestock management advice, and the adoption of smart farming technologies, improving efficiency, yields, and climate resilience among farmers.Further strengthening its agricultural footprint, the county has rolled out an extensive input support program targeting more than 700,000 farmers across all 60 wards.
Beneficiaries have received free farm inputs including fertilizer, certified maize and bean seeds, avocado and assorted tree seedlings, as well as livestock inputs such as piglets and chicks.
This diversified input distribution strategy has enabled farmers to expand production, enhance food security, and reduce vulnerability to market and climate shocks.
The NAVCDP recognition underscores Kiambu County’s commitment to inclusive growth, innovation, and sustainable agriculture. By combining institutional support, youth-driven innovation, and direct farmer assistance, the county has not only strengthened local value chains but also set a practical model for other counties seeking to translate national agricultural policies into tangible grassroots impact.
