Safaricom Restores M-Pesa Services After Successful System Upgrade

Safaricom has announced the successful completion of its scheduled M-Pesa system upgrade, confirming that services have now resumed fully.

The maintenance, carried out in the early hours of Monday, 22nd September 2025, temporarily suspended all M-Pesa functions for three hours, including money transfers, airtime purchases, and bill payments. The telco says the exercise was completed smoothly, with users now able to transact as normal.

In a statement, Safaricom noted that the upgrade was finalized without incident and emphasized its commitment to providing more reliable and seamless customer experiences. The company highlighted that such improvements are part of ongoing investments to secure and strengthen the platform, which remains central to Kenya’s financial system.

This announcement comes after Safaricom’s earlier advisory last week, where it had warned customers of the planned downtime. At the time, the firm explained that the exercise was necessary to enhance service delivery while minimizing disruption by scheduling it during off-peak hours.

M-Pesa, which has been operating for 18 years, now processes billions of shillings daily and is a key driver of Kenya’s digital economy. By completing the upgrade on schedule and restoring services promptly, Safaricom has reassured its more than 30 million users of continued reliability as demand for mobile money solutions grows.
