Monday, January 20, 2025 – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Molo-based activist Richard Otieno, who was hacked to death by unknown assailants on Saturday night.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Gachagua urged authorities to expedite investigations and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. He criticized the government’s silence on the matter, insisting that swift action is necessary.
“The Government of Kenya cannot afford to sit on the fence on this matter,” he stated, warning that the growing political intolerance is reaching alarming levels.
Gachagua mourned Otieno’s death, describing him as a passionate human rights defender. He accused the current administration of using violence to suppress opposition voices and instill fear among citizens.
“The gruesome and brutal murder of Richard Otieno is yet another desperate attempt to silence government critics after failed abductions,” he lamented. “We must ensure justice is served.”
The former deputy president also extended his condolences to Otieno’s family and the people of Molo, praising the activist for his dedication to justice and human rights.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also weighed in, accusing the government of covering up the incident. He claimed that the identity of Otieno’s killer is well known and called for immediate action against those responsible.
“There is no need for the DCI to investigate; the killer is known. He must be charged for this heinous crime,” Owino asserted.
Otieno was reportedly attacked while heading home from a local bar. The assailants allegedly struck him with an axe, killing him on the spot.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with calls for justice mounting.
