Kalonzo Invites Gachagua to Opposition Amid 2027 Election Speculations

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has extended an invitation to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to join the opposition, sparking talk of a potential coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking Thursday at a burial in Embu, Kalonzo, alongside Azimio principals Eugene Wamalwa and Ferdinand Waititu, reiterated his commitment to strengthening the coalition’s role in the opposition. Despite recent government appointments, Kalonzo assured supporters of Azimio’s resilience.

“We are ready to face the new year as a united coalition. For those who chose government, let them go alone. We must forge a new path,” Kalonzo said.

Wamalwa echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments, emphasizing the significance of a partnership with Gachagua. “The former DP mentioned working with us. Should we embrace him in our coalition?” he asked the crowd, receiving enthusiastic support.

Gachagua, during remarks earlier this week, acknowledged Kalonzo’s historical support for Mount Kenya, particularly during the late President Mwai Kibaki’s era. He hinted at a possible Ukambani-Mount Kenya alliance, describing it as a strong contender for the presidency.

“For Kalonzo to win, Ukambani must boost its votes to 3.5–4 million. In Mount Kenya, we aim for 10 million votes. Together, this partnership could secure the presidency,” Gachagua stated.

He urged Ukambani leaders to prioritize voter registration, especially among the youth, to strengthen their political bargaining power. “The only political debt we recognize is to Kalonzo and the Ukambani people,” he added.

The proposal has stirred excitement, with political observers speculating on the implications of such a coalition for the 2027 elections.
