The move comes as a precautionary measure to mitigate the heightened risks posed by the torrential rains and subsequent flooding.
According to Maurice Akech, the Executive Director of NCA, the directive specifically targets new construction activities, particularly excavations and projects in close proximity to waterways. Akech emphasized the inherent dangers associated with excavations during moist conditions, citing the heightened risk of structural failure that could potentially result in fatalities or injuries to workers.
“Unsecured deep excavations could lead to slope instability and failure, especially with increased moisture and water content which poses a risk of burial or injury to workers,” stated Akech in a press release.
The relentless downpours, forecasted to persist throughout the month by the Kenya Meteorological Department, have unleashed widespread devastation across the nation. Reports of floods and landslides have inundated various regions, leaving behind a grim trail of destruction and loss of life.
