Reasons Behind Azimio’s Walkout During Budget Statement Reading

Junet Mohamed, the National Assembly Minority Whip, has clarified the reasons behind the decision of Azimio MPs to walk out during the Budget statement reading by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u. According to Junet, the opposition does not have confidence in the budget estimates being presented by the Treasury Cabinet Secretary.

Junet stated that the budget estimate appears to be designed for the Kenya Kwanza administration rather than the people of Kenya. He expressed that Azimio does not believe this budget serves the interests of the Kenyan people and is instead focused on the Kenya Kwanza government.

Junet emphasized that they will only participate in the budget process if it is tailored to meet the expectations of ordinary Kenyans. Until a budget that prioritizes the needs of the Kenyan people is presented, they will continue to abstain from participating.

During the budget statement reading, Azimio MPs walked out of the National Assembly, expressing their dissatisfaction. They also voiced their disapproval by booing at the Cabinet Secretary as he continued reading the budget. Despite the walkout, Ndung’u proceeded with presenting the budget statement under the guidance of Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

The decision to walk out was led by Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.
