The Kenya Railways Corporation has recently announced that they will temporarily suspend their mid-week train services from Nairobi to Nanyuki. The suspension is set to begin on June 21, 2023, and will continue until further notice, as stated in a press release on June 15. However, the corporation made it clear that weekend trips will not be affected and will proceed as scheduled.
The Nanyuki-Nairobi route was reintroduced in 2020 after the refurbishment of the Nairobi Commuter Railways system, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion on the roads. This particular route had remained inactive for more than ten years before being reintroduced. The train route passes through Nairobi, Thika, Maragua, Sagana, Karatina, and finally Nanyuki.
While the corporation did not provide explicit reasons for the temporary suspension of mid-week services, it is presumably due to operational considerations or other factors that have impacted the service’s viability during weekdays. Nevertheless, the company assures the public that the weekend train trips will continue without interruption. Currently, a train departs for Nanyuki every Friday at 9:00 am and returns every Sunday at 9:00 am.
The temporary suspension of the mid-week train services between Nairobi and Nanyuki may inconvenience some passengers who rely on the service for their daily commute. However, the continuation of weekend trips ensures that individuals who utilize the train service for weekend travel will not be affected.
