In response to a recent surge in reported deaths within accommodation facilities, the Kenyan government is urging the public to exercise caution and verify the registration and licensing status of establishments, including popular lodging options like Airbnbs, before booking their stay. The appeal comes after two fatalities occurred within a span of less than two weeks, prompting calls for stricter regulations in the hospitality sector.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Alfred Mutua, addressed the concerns on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for the public to ensure the compliance of accommodation facilities with existing government directives and quality standards. Mutua revealed that the government is currently conducting a thorough review of the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) to assess and strengthen regulatory measures.
“We urge the public to verify the registration and license status of facilities to ensure compliance with already outlined directives by the government and maintain quality standards,” said Mutua, underlining the importance of safety for all those utilizing accommodation services.
Warning of potential legal action, Mutua stated that any violations of TRA licensing laws would be met with consequences. He also highlighted that late renewals of licenses would incur penalties as per the law, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enforcing adherence to regulations within the tourism sector.
As the primary regulator overseeing Kenya’s Tourism Sector, Mutua expressed the Ministry’s dedication to safeguarding the well-being and safety of all stakeholders involved.
