Authorities are currently investigating a tragic incident in which three men were ambushed and fatally shot in Kibish, Turkana County. The victims were traveling on two motorcycles in the Nangoseingatuny area when they were attacked by unknown gunmen. The attackers then hid the bodies in a nearby bush before making their escape.
After receiving information about the incident, the police arrived at the scene and conducted a thorough search, eventually discovering the bodies in the bushes. The bodies were subsequently transported to the Lodwar mortuary, where they will remain until they are identified and autopsied.
At this stage, investigators have not determined the motive behind the attack. The incident has raised concerns about potential retaliation from the families of the victims, adding to the prevailing tension in the area. Rift Valley police boss, Tom Odera, has assured the public that the matter is being actively investigated, urging patience while the authorities work to uncover the truth.
The region where the incident occurred has been subject to a police operation aimed at recovering illegal weapons in the possession of civilians. This operation, known as Operation Komesha Uhalifu North Rift, has been ongoing for the past three months and involves multiple agencies working across various counties affected by cattle rustling.
In addition to law enforcement efforts, the government has emphasized the importance of strategic investments and sustainable development in combating crime in the Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has outlined a long-term vision that focuses on empowering communities to actively participate in the fight against animal rustling and engage in legitimate nation-building activities.
As part of this vision, plans are underway to provide subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to residents in the area, with the aim of reviving farming as a sustainable livelihood option. Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to dismantling not only the criminals involved in cattle rustling but also the entire network supporting this illegal industry.
