On Friday, a tear gas canister was hurled at a roadside protest in Kiambu where opposition leader Raila Odinga was speaking.
While residents watched Raila and the Azimio leaders deliver remarks, the canister was hurled into the throng. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who was on the microphone when the canister exploded close to the motorcade, criticized the action.
According to Kalonzo, the official in charge of that should already be listed at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Although it was unclear if a police officer fired the canister, it is illegal for a citizen to possess such security equipment. Invoking the police’s ownership of the canister, Kalonzo requested action from Inspector General Japhet Koome.
Leaders were compelled to withdraw into their cars, only to reappear when everything was back to normal.
Despite the brief interruption in Kiambu, the rally continued without incident.
